So I just looked up and realized that it is already the first of September! If you’re new to my site, I’m a Houstonian, born and raised. Hurricane Harvey hit last week and was the most devastating storm I’ve experienced during my lifetime. I was so fortunate and my street stayed high and dry but I spent about a week stuck in the house as my neighborhood was completely surrounded by water. Many of my friends were not so lucky and I’ve been helping rip out sheetrock and cleaning up where I can. It’s beautiful the way the city has banned together through this and are working so hard to help those who have been devastated.
Last week felt surreal, trapped inside watching the storm wreak havoc through the tv and being powerless to get anywhere to help. It’s like time stood still.
Since I couldn’t do much else, I spent the week at home with my love, making meals, reading books, journaling, and trying to keep tabs on the people that matter to me.
All that is to say, August did not go as expected and while I was able to honor some of my intentions, others (like working out) were put on the back burner.
If you are looking for ways to give during this time of intense need, please consider donating here to help families within the YES Prep School system that have been affected by the storm. These are the kids I taught last year and you can rest assured that your money will be used to help those with genuine need.
I was not on my game the second half of the month. I got a bunch of non-perishable foods to prep for the hurricane so I did a lot of snacking on things like chex mix and boxed mac and cheese because they were in the house. I’d say I worked out 1-2 times per week throughout the month so definitely not my goal of 4 times per month but not nothing.
I set a goal of finishing 2 courses for August. I did complete this goal and actually signed up for a few webinars and email challenges as well.
My goal was to go kayaking and rock climbing. We did a hike, a pub crawl, a pool party and went rock climbing. So I didn’t quite hit my goal but we took advantage of other things that came up so I still feel like this month was a success.
I did zero planning for the wedding so that’s a fail. But I did spend a week cuddled up with my lub, making meals together and going on adventures which are arguably more important.
I updated my service page and worked with a client to help him get set up for the beginning of school so I hit my 1 client goal

Our lease is up the end of this month. I thought we found a place to move last month but turns out we got scammed. I’m working on getting that deposit back but honestly am a little concerned that it’s going to take some hoop jumping. Either way, we’ve got three weeks to find a place, pack, and move. Wish me luck!
This month I want to up my game and move from 1 weekly post to 2. I also want to start including some of my own photography.
The week before the storm, I started going on daily walks but then was trapped in the house this week. This month I want to make a 30 minute walk part of my morning routine every day.
Sweets and I are feeling all those summer parties and pub crawls and decided September would be a good month to cut drinking for a bit to help knock-down some unnecessary calories. I basically live on sparkling water and kombucha but I have noticed that I’ve been having more adult drinks lately and don’t really want to make that a habit. If you have some awesome healthy mocktail recipes holla at your girl!
I’ve been on a huge reading kick this summer– I’ve read 15 books since school let out in June. I don’t think I can keep up this pace as I start to work for other goals but I would like to finish 5 books in September.
I’ll be reading:
The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul( Debbie Rodriguez): I’ve just started this book about an unexpected group of women that come together in an Afghan coffee shop.
Abandon Me: Memoirs(Melissa Febos): A memoir about love, loss, and identity.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (audiobook)– I started re-reading (or more accurately listening) to the Harry Potter series in the car, on walks, or just while I’m generally tinkering. I’m up to book 4 of my all time favorite series. The dark undertones about racial tensions and genocide feel especially jarring in our current political climate.
Wildcard– haven’t picked the 5th. I want to have some space to pick something on a whim. Follow me on Instagram to find out what I choose!
So tell me, what are your intentions for the month of September?
